Games and Play in Austen's England

Updated: Apr 3

On July 15, 2019, we tried out some novel play as we explored the games and pastimes popular in Jane Austen's England. Presenter Anne Fertig talked about the role of games in Austen's novels and shared a few of Austen's own favorite games.

We explored game manuals and parlor games from Regency Era England to discover the most popular pastimes from the era, including card games, tabletop games, and social games. Participants also got a chance to try out some of Austen's favorite games, including charades, conundrums, and whist!
