About the Event
In this illustrated lecture, Devoney Looser will present stories from her new biography, Sister Novelists: The Trailblazing Porter Sisters, Who Paved the Way for Austen and the Brontës, focusing on how Jane Austen might be reread through the once-celebrated fiction writing and colorful lives of Jane Porter (1775-1850) and Anna Maria Porter (1778-1832). In their daily lives, the Misses Porter resembled Sense and Sensibility’s eldest Dashwood sisters, with differing personalities. Jane was the tall, dark, and serious older sister, with Maria (as she was called) proving the lighter, brighter, and sparkling younger one.
