This talk will explore Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice by examining the influence on modern Japanese literature and the adaptations in the context of popular culture (films, plays, and comics books). However, popularization of the novel in modern Japan and its substantial influence can be observed in numerous Japanese translations of the novel and the reception by the common reader. This lecture will explore why the novel has proved so popular among Japanese audiences.
