Pride and Prejudice as Angels’ Ladder: Jane Austen in Takarazuka Musical Theater

Dr. Haruko Takakuwa will be discussing Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice on stage through the Japanese troupe Takarazuka. Takarazuka, famous for being an all-female company, specializes in romances with attractive “male” leading roles.  For Takarazuka, Pride and Prejudice provides an ideal, genteel romance plot between Elizabeth and Darcy through which to appeal to their predominantly female audience.
