About the Event
This lecture by Barnita Bagchi will focus on Austen’s early work ‘Catharine, or the Bower’ in relation to the writer’s family connection with India, through her aunt Philadelphia and Philadelphia’s daughter Eliza. After this, the lecture will consider the life and oeuvre of Kashibai Kanitkar (1861-1948), pioneering woman novelist in Marathi, and the Austenian resonances in her oeuvre The lecture concludes with a consideration of Austenian resonances in Anita Desai’s Clear Light of Day (1980), in Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Boy (1993), and Gurinder Chadha’s film Bride and Prejudice (2004).
